Mind, body and emotions – what a wonderful combination of different sensations that can criss cross and help us to fully experience being here and being part of the world.
We should not ignore these. In my humble opinion, we must give ourselves permission to immerse in human life. This is after all why we are here – being pure energy or consciousness floating the universe does not give us any way to see, understand and experience ourselves. But as children play dress up and pretend to be what they are not, gives them an opportunity to embrace whatever role they play and get a glimpse and a taste of what it must feel like to be a princess, a king, a warrior, a dog, busy, sad or angry without actually being controlled by it. And they immerse themselves in it for their own sake, not to make others have an experience.
As grownups we have lost the ability to understand the dress up concept. When we play dressup, we rarely do it just to play and fool around – but more often to impress and perform – to make others feel and experience – not ourselves. Even roleplayers have ambitions sometimes and forget the fun of just pretending to be something they are not.
The famous drag RuPaul, has said “We’re all born naked, the rest is drag” – and so it is in more than one sense. The roles we play, the identities we put on as well as the clothes, they are always a choice. They might not be a conscious choice, but as soon as we realize that “personality” and “personal history” is not a rigid truth about who we are, but rather something we can play with, then we can feel free to explore human life in a way that leaves more room for fun and sensuousness.
